Learn how to hand crochet and make a cute and chunky flower shaped pillow! No hooks or needles are needed to make this fun design. All you need is some Chunky Yarn, your hands, and a little bit of time.
As a crocheter, I have always enjoyed working with chunky yarns both because it saves a lot of crocheting time and because I just love the look! When I saw the new Chunky Yarn, I couldnât wait to give it a try. This gorgeous yarn really takes chunky yarn to a whole new level!
I really had a lot of fun playing around with this yarn! In the end, I created a couple of super chunky flower pillows, and today, Iâm happy to share the pattern with you all and show you how to hand crochet.
I love how these pillow turned out! My daughter loves them too and quickly stole one for her room. If you want to make a flower pillow yourself, keep reading for the full instructions.
Chunky flower pillow supplies:

And thatâs it! You donât need anything else! I love a simple supply list, donât you?
HOW TO HAND CROCHET (OR FINGER CROCHET)
You probably noticed that the supply list above does not include a hook and that is because this fun flower pillow is made using finger crochet (also called hand crochet). If you have never tried finger crochet before I want to reassure you that it is super easy! If you have crocheted with a hook before, then you can definitely crochet with your fingers!
Before we jump into the pattern for the flower pillow, I want to quickly share a few tips for finger crochet.
The stitches use in finger crochet are exactly the same as those used in regular crochet, but instead of a hook, you just use your hands!
That doesnât mean, however, that you have to limit yourself to just using one hooked finger. Feel free to use two fingers to pinch the yarn as well and to use your other hand to help move your loops.
Additionally, make sure not to pull your stitches too tight. That was probably my biggest when I first started finger crocheting. Especially with huge yarn like this, it can be easy to pull your loops down tight, but that will make it difficult to get your fingers into your stitches later on.
If you are brand new to finger crochet, I recommend practicing with a little swatch before jumping into a pattern.
Okay, letâs get making!
HOW TO HAND CROCHET A CHUNKY FLOWER PILLOW.
Please Note: This pattern uses American crochet terms and is free for personal use only.Â
Stitches Used:
- Chain (ch)
- Slip Stitch (sl st)
- Single Crochet (sc)
- Half Double Crochet (hdc)
- Double Crochet (dc)
My finished pillows were about 20â³ (51 cm) wide; however, the size of your pillow may vary depending on how tightly you crochet.
Center Circle Pattern (Make 2)
Round 1:Â Chain 2, 6 sc in furthest chain from working loop.
Round 2:Â Work 2 sc in each st of previous round. (I recommend marking the first stitch so you know when you have made it back around. A small piece of yarn works well for this.) Sl st to first stitch of round. Finish off and weave in ends on back.
When you have two center circles finished, itâs time to crochet them together. Start by placing the two circles with wrong sides facing. Join your second color of yarn through one stitch of both circles.
Petal Round 1:Â Work one sc in each of the first 10 stitches going through both circles. Then use some extra yarn (the ends you trimmed off of your circles work perfectly for this!) to stuff the center of your flower. Work one sc in each of the remaining sts going through both circles (12 total sc sts).
